This passion project explores the implementation 2D character aesthetics onto a 3D character. The visual qualities are typically associated with 2D illustration, such as flatness, controlled shading, and stylized lighting.
To achieve this effect, the character was hand-painted using texture painting techniques, reducing realistic depth cues in favor of flatter color transitions. Custom normal maps were also painted to control how light interacts with the surface, minimizing volumetric shading and reinforcing a graphic, illustrated appearance.
The project was developed using Blender for modeling and sculpting, and Substance 3D Painter for texturing. Through this process, I deepened my understanding of 3D sculpting, texture painting, and the relationship between materials, lighting, and perceived dimensionality.
